Congratulations to our GLBT Filmmakers

Picture
5Degrees is proud and would like to congratulate our GLBT filmmakers Sun Koh, Tan Wei Keong, and Loo Zihan for sweeping the awards at the inaugural Singapore Short Film Awards held at The Substation on Sunday night. Being the only Singaporean to win the coveted Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival back in 2002, she walked away with both the Best Director and Best Fiction award for her short film "Dirty Bitch".

Tan Wei Keong took home with him Best Animation for "Hush Baby", with Loo Zihan's "Threshold" having clinched the Best Scripts award. Royston Tan received an honorary award for outstanding contribution to the local film community through his short films.

At last year's 5Degrees' Support Our GLBT Filmmakers event at Apsara Asia, our stellar cast of directors, Boo Junfeng, Leon Cheo, Loo Zihan, Sun Koh, Jeremy Sing, Eva Tang, Michael Tay and Tan Wei Keong had their short films screened, which included both "Dirty Bitch" and "Hush Baby".

With your continuous support, we will see each and everyone of our filmmakers win - both in and out of Singapore.

5Degrees Session #8: Support Our Local GLBT Film-makers

Thank you everyone for the wonderful turn out!
How often does one get to admire, at one seating, a splash of colours, of that of a rainbow and then, maybe a bit more, from the talented filmmakers of our GLBT community? Not very often. That is why, when 5Degrees organized the "Support Your Local GLBT Filmmakers" event, consisting of works by Boo Junfeng, Leon Cheo, Loo Zihan, Sun Koh, Jeremy Sing, Eva Tang, Michael Tay and Tan Wei Keong, on July 16, it was a full turnout, notwithstanding the fact that the event was relocated from The Substation to Apsara Asia Studios at Kg Kapor road.

So what was the nature of the screenings? On reel was a series of twelve short films by eight of our up and coming filmmakers. There was the poignant narrative Untitled, by filmmaker Loo Zihan's mother which will resonate with the hearts of all mothers of their GLBT sons and daughters. And then there was the monologue by Michael Tay, a wistful tale about treasuring past relationships. The maturity in film direction is apparent in most, if not all the filmmakers.

There were familiar themes that will relate to the community too, such as Boo Junfeng's Tanjong Rhu tale of entrapment, and
Leon Cheo’s Swing which dealt with moving on (or not being able to move on) after breaking up. And then there were other themes that would probably never exist in any of our imaginations, such as Sun Koh’s Dirty Bitch, which was wittingly provocative, bold and totally unexpected especially at the end, with a music video with a French song, probably directed in a film noir fashion.

Of course, the main objective of the event transcends beyond an ordinary film screening – 5Degrees, together with sponsors Fridae.com, NewUrbanMale.com, Curry Favor, Apsara Asia, The Substation and Dave Kong, organized the event in order to connect the filmmakers to the community-at-large, especially to the potential sponsors who could assist these filmmakers in some way or another. A “meet-the-potential-sponsors” session was organized before and after the event, in a casual manner to facilitate spontaneous networking. As Zihan aptly put it, “It was a good learning experience too for all the filmmakers - it's not every day we deal with a audience which we have intentions of finding patrons or sponsors from and we (or at least I) was trying to adjust to that mindset yesterday evening.”

The seed has been planted, and we will wait in anticipation for the ‘green shoots’ to grow, in time to come.

5Degrees congratulates Pink Dot's Success at Hong Lim Park!
