5Degrees Networking #3
____________________________________________________________

Early!

Two months (and then a little more) have passed since 5Degrees #2, and on the last Wednesday of the month, June 26th, we held our networking session #3 at Play. To our surprise, people actually started streaming in 15 minutes before the scheduled time and caught the organizers off guard, but they were up and running in no time to receive the incoming crowd. The event started off as a cozy networking session, but the chatter from the seventy-over crowed soon warmed up the place. There were quite a handful of new members; among them, fresh graduates as well as some seeking a career transition. This round's topic, 'Career Development - The Employer's Perspective' will without doubt, be relevant to them.

James & Kenneth on Career Development.

Willie interrupted the networking by giving a short introduction on the background of 5Degrees and what it is all about, before he welcomed up on stage the chief man behind the 5Degrees online portal, Douglas Ng. Douglas acknowledged the team's hard work and effort. He briefly explained and provided details on registration matters, before going on to other details of the website. After Douglas had encouraged everyone to check out the website, Willie then introduced the speakers for the night on career development, James and Kenneth (More info on James Koh and Kenneth Lim can be found here (need to link to James' and Kenneth's bio on one of the pages)). James talked about the importance of writing a good resume, and some of the common faux pas that applicants / job leavers make. Kenneth shared with the floor his amassed experience and complimented James' comments.  Soon, the Q&A session was opened to the floor. With insightful questions and from the speakers, the exchange was most enriching and beneficial for everyone - novices and veterans alike. A question from the floor about a certain realistic (though potentially awkward) situation had everyone roaring into laughter, but nonetheless was swiftly answered by the speakers. As the Q&A session came to a close, Willie introduced A Nation In Concert's founder and organizer, Jerry Siah, to do a little promotion for the big concert that's coming up in October. And the evening continued on...

The night continued on, with name cards exchanged amidst drinks and delicious (and never enough) canape's from Tuck Shop. Business ideas were shared, collaborations were discussed, and there were more sharing for the ones who approached the speakers with their specific questions in mind. People exchanged goodnight greetings and thanks before they started to disperse at about 11pm, preparing themselves for work the following day, and looking forward to 5Degrees #4. Another great evening, which would not have been possible if not for everyone. Kudos!
